Ocean, waves and...

Meeting the Atlantic with Respect

Fuerteventura is a paradise of endless beaches, crystal-clear waters and landscapes that feel almost otherworldly. But let’s not forget – this isn’t a calm Mediterranean bay. This is the Atlantic Ocean: vast, powerful, alive. And it deserves to be treated with respect.

Swimming? Yes – with awareness

Caleta de Fuste offers one of the island’s safest bays: calm, protected, and perfect for relaxed swimming – even with children.

Yet the Atlantic remains wild at heart, and that’s what makes it beautiful.

The ocean is not a pool

  • Currents can be strong, even when unseen.
  • The water is cooler: refreshing, but not for hour-long swims.
  • Tides rise and fall quickly: what’s shore now may be sea soon.

Tip: Respect the ocean. Watch it, learn it, never underestimate it.

Choose your beach wisely

Fuerteventura’s beaches range from calm coves to wild shores. Caleta de Fuste is generally safe; others, like Cofete, are more powerful.

  • Red flag: Do not swim.
  • Yellow flag: Be cautious, stay close.
  • Green flag: Enjoy, but stay mindful.

Local advice: Ask lifeguards or locals — one question can prevent surprises.

Waves don’t “play”

Windy days can bring fun waves — until they pull you further than expected.

  • Stay where you can stand if you’re not a confident swimmer.
  • Supervise children at all times.
  • Keep inflatables close: the current can take them away in seconds.

Snorkelling & Watersport

  • Wear fins or reef shoes in rocky areas.
  • Stay visible (buoy, bright colours).
  • Never snorkel alone.
  • Listen carefully to rental instructors for surf, paddle or kayak.

Water temperature

The Atlantic is fresh but inviting.

  • Summer: 21–23 °C
  • Winter: 18–19 °C (best with wetsuit).

Remember

The Atlantic Ocean is a powerful ocean teeming with life

  • Currents can be strong, even if they are not visible.
  • Always follow the instructions of the lifeguards and rescue personnel.
  • It is essential to respect the beach flag signals for your safety.
  • Do not be overconfident: the sea can be unpredictable.
  • Never let children out of your sight.
